On Saturday 14thApril 2018 I attended Wellington Phoenix FC’s last game of the season played in the QBE Stadium in Auckland. The Phoenix play one or two Australian A league games in Auckland to allow the locals a chance to see a game of professional football instead of the regular overdose of Rugby. The crowd wasn’t huge but they had a bit of song and dance about them as the rain poured down on North Harbour Stadium as it had done over AKL all day.
Prior to the game I had never photographed a professional football game in New Zealand. I have photographed many in the UK and had lots of connections for gaining access but all I had to do was contact the club and go through some paperwork for them give me an accredited pass for the game. I have to say the media staff I spoke to at the club were a pleasure to work with.
A 2-1 victory seen the Nix finish on a high and with other results going their way they finished the season above the wooden spoon position they had held for so long. It wasn’t the same as the displays I’m used to seeing from the might Dunfermline Athletic but with time they’ll get there….I kid.
